It is an island of the Calamian Archipelago, just off the north-western coast of Busuanga Island. It is part of the Municipality of Busuanga, Palawan, Philippines. The entire island was declared as a wildlife sanctuary and game preserve in 1977. Not it is a tourist attraction known as CalauitSafari Park.
This 3,760 hectare island is a sanctuary to the exotic animals from Kenya (Giraffe, Zebra, Gazelle, Topi, Eland, Impala, Bushbuck, and Waterbuck) for breeding and propagation, combined with endemic life like the Calamian Deer,Palawan Bear Cat, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Peacocks, and among others. The island boasts of sandy white beaches surrounded by crystalline waters. The waters around the island serve as the habitat for the vanishing sea cows, sea turtles, and giant clams. Healthy coral reefs are also found in the area, which has become a sanctuary for commercial fish species as well.
Established on August 31, 1976 through PP 1578 as a Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in response to the appeal to member countries of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature – IUCN, to provide a sanctuary for propagating endangered African Wildlife Species.
